Prediction 0003 Redux

by

A while back I made a prediction about immersive reality. An article on CRACKED.com has really fleshed out how we could progress to the point of a truly immersive reality experience. And unlike me, these guys manage to add a little humor (and some cusses) to the subject.

I suggest you decide right now whether you will ever agree to a physically implanted interface. If you are less than 50, it is a question you will likely face in your lifetime, and it is going to creep up on us.

I fell off the gaming train back at Mario level 1 in about ’85 when you went zooming past me. I am over 50. I will probably never have jacks installed in my back. We are looking at the next stage of evolution when we become the game. Or the game is playing us.

This prediction seems to ignore just how much work goes into making those virtual worlds. In order for games to exist, there have to be a LOT of people — people who have not given up on the “real” reality — to write the stories, do the programming, keep the servers running, etc.

But in another sense, your prediction has already come true for a lot of people. There are TONS of people who are right this very minute doing everything they can to avoid interacting with reality, and it’s not just WoW addicts. Escapists can use TV, movies, books, comics, drugs, and probably quite a few things I haven’t even thought of.

I would worry less about machines taking over and more about who among the non-escapist humans will be writing the stories, the history, and the laws.
