Leiningen Versus the Ants

by

This is one of my favorite short stories.

A couple of my favorite lines from the story:

“Critical situations first become crises,” he explained to his men, “when oxen or women get excited.”

And so imprisoned between water and fire, they had been delivered into the annihilation that was their god.

Thanks to Marty for reminding me of the title.

Have you seen “The Naked Jungle”? (Charlton Heston film from 1954 based on this story)

    It’s kind of awesome.

I read this story in college in the 60’s, and some years later saw “The Naked Jungle” ( how could Hollywood ever sell a movie titled Leiningen Versus the Ants, even with Charlton Heston?) Just finished watching and old “Mac Guyver” dvd from 1985 titled “Trumbo’s World”. A straight ripoff of the original story, which, by the way, is one of my favorite short stories as well. I remember it well enough after 40 + years to spot a counterfeit.
